German offensive tackle commits to Louisville

Gerrik Vollmer at the Louisville prospect camp in June

Louisville landed a commitment on Sunday from Gerrik Vollmer, a 6-foot-5, 280-pound offensive tackle, who was born and raised Germany.

That's right, Germany.

Vollmer came over to the United States as an exchange student last August. He graduated from Philip Barbour High School in West Virginia. Vollmer is back in Germany for the summer, but he will return to the States in August. He will attend the Taft School, which is a prep school in Connecticut.

Vollmer will graduate early and enroll early at Louisville. The Cards are his only scholarship offer.

"When I was there the first time, I knew this is the right place for me," Vollmer said. "I love the coaching staff there, and Louisville is gonna be something special. I wanted to be a part of that."

Vollmer is blessed to be able to have the opportunity to play college football at a program like Louisville.

It's amazing," Vollmer said. "When I first got that offer, I didn't know what to say, because people overseas don't really get this chance. To have this opportunitie now is great for me and my family, because we can finally say hard work pays off."

Vollmer suits up for the German national football team.

"To play for the national team is the biggest accomplishment you can get in Germany, and it's great to compete against the best players in Germany," he said.

Volmer's father also played on the German national team and taught his son how to play the game of football.
